Supernatural Christmas! Lesson 2/3 - Mary and Joseph, Zacharias and Elizabeth
So many supernatural things happened around the birth of Jesus. It’s like God rolled up His sleeves and a bunch of miracles fell out of them! Just like we like to make a nice gift look really nice, too, with pretty ribbons and paper, God’s gift of Jesus to our world was the very best He had to give, but then He made the gift look beautiful, too, with all the miracles He did, just to make it special!
Now, I bet you think you know the whole story of Christmas… you know, the shepherds, the wisemen, Mary and Joseph, you’ve probably heard it all! But I bet you’ve never noticed just how supernatural it all really was.
Around the birth of Jesus, there are at least 16 notable miracles! To help notice them all, we’ve made up some paper Christmas ornaments (one for each supernatural miracle) that you can print off, cut out, and put up on a small tree as you discover all the supernatural things that make up the Christmas story. Today we’re looking at the miracles #6 - 10.

Last week, we left off where Gabriel tells Mary that she will have a baby, and her cousin Elizabeth is now expecting a baby, too. Our story picks up here as Mary decides to go and visit Elizabeth…
Mary is barely pregnant at this time, and her baby (Jesus) would be too small for her even to look pregnant. but Elizabeth has been carrying her baby (John the Baptist) for six months now, so her belly would be quite large by this time. Even so, as soon as Elizabeth sees Mary, her baby makes a great big movement in her womb. Supernatural Miracle #6 - how did baby John recognize baby Jesus? (Some scholars believe this is the first time Elizabeth felt her baby move, which was long past the time she should have. That would mean working of miracles or gifts of healing was going on!)
Then Elizabeth gets a word of knowledge that Mary is pregnant…. with the Messiah! Supernatural miracle #7!
Mary stays with Elizabeth for about 3 months. So baby John was either just born, or about to be born before she left. After John was born, the priests who dedicated him were going to name him Zacharias, but Elizabeth insisted he should be called John. When they asked Zacharias, he wrote on a tablet, “His name is John,” and immediately his tongue was loosed and he could speak again! Supernatural miracle #8
Then, Zacharias is filled with the Holy Spirit and begins to prophesy over his new son and what his life would be like. This is supernatural miracle #9. A prophecy is a message directly from God.
So Mary returns to her home town, but faces a problem. Joseph discovers she is pregnant, and he knows he is not the father of the baby. He starts to wonder if he should marry Mary at all. While he still doesn’t know what to do, an angel appears to him in a dream, reassuring him that Mary is indeed carrying the Messiah in her womb, and that Joseph should still marry her. Not only is this another angelic appearance (supernatural miracle #10) but the angel gives him a word of wisdom, or a super smart answer that tells you what to do.
And so Joseph and Mary marry, but will soon have to travel to Bethlehem. But more on that next time!
